SUBJECT: Intermittent Banging or Popping Sounds from the Refrigerator
Customer Complaint:
• The customer hears a loud banging or popping noise emanating from the refrigerator.
• The sound will be intermittent, maybe only one time per day, but it could happen more often.
Root Cause:
• The Refrigerator section drain pan, located behind the evaporator, flexes due to changes in temperature.
• Since the drain pan is not secured in place, heat generated during defrost causes the drain pan assembly to flex, which creates the popping sound.
• The sound can occur again when the compressor runs after defrost and the temperature cools down rapidly.
Field Solution:
• A new drain pan, which contains strengthening ribs, has been developed to assure a tighter fit in the liner and to resist flexing.
• Remove the original pan and replace it with the new one.
