Guidelines for Submitting Your Resume

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Resumes which comply with the following guidelines are most easily matched to existing opportunities.

Your name, address and telephone number and email address should be easily located at the top of the first page of your resume.

Use a font with a point size of 10 or larger (a slightly longer resume is much preferable to one printed in 8-point type.) Our eyes aren't getting any younger and larger type works better if we need to photocopy your resume.

Use common fonts, such as Times Roman or Helvetica. Do NOT use script fonts. Use italics sparingly. Note that for printed material, a serif font such as Roman is much easier to read than a sans-serif font such as Arial.

Do not include graphics, tables or special symbols in the resume.

Print your resume and cover letter on white paper with black ink (use a reasonably new toner cartridge or ribbon). Do not use yellow legal sized paper.

Print the entire resume in portrait orientation on letter sized paper.

Do not provide diplomas, transcripts, etc. unless requested.

Provide three references at least one of whom should be a recent work related supervisor.

Please provide us with original resumes, or crisp clear copies. Please do not try to fax us a photocopy of your resume. If we can't read it you won't be considered.

Email resumes may be in MS Word, WordPerfect or ASCII text format and supply attachments in either UUENCODE or MIME format.

Hints for Success:

If you don't have the time to "do it right" on your resume, then we'll conclude that you don't have the time to do it right for our customers either, and therefore we just don't have the time for you. Make sure that your resume reflects your high standards and commitment to quality.

Spell-check your resume and then proof-read it and then ask someone else to proof-read it

Resumes with obvious spelling errors are likely to end up in the "X" files
with all the others that we intend to never interview (let alone hire).

We are not interested in your ability to purchase fancy paper, your ability to make your printer sit up and dance, or your amazing cleverness when in comes to print layout techniques. A clearly printed, well organized resume will be far more likely to be noticed by us than one that uses fancy tricks to disguise a lack of skills or confidence in your abilities.

Organize your work history chronologically from latest back. Do not waste a lot of space with work history unrelated to IT unless you feel that it is relevant to the position that you are applying for. For instance if you worked for five years as a taxi dispatcher, a one or two line entry is sufficient to describe that job, unless the position you are responding to involves a dispatch or logistics project.

Simple, concise and plenty of white space are major guiding goals in preparing your resume.

Be consistent. If you say in a summary somewhere that you have 3 years
experience in language-X version n.nn, then be sure to show us where in your work-history you acquired that experience.

Be honest. If you say you started working with Java in 1987, you can rest
assured that we will never call you, but we will keep your resume in our X
files. (java is not that old)

Or if you claim to have been working with Visual FoxPro version 6
since 1993, your resume will also find its way into the X-files. (Visual Fox Pro is not that old)

Lies, inconsistencies and sloppiness in your resume are the key reasons for
not being called. About 20% of the resumes we receive are rejected for
these reasons. If you don't have the time to "do it right" on your resume,
then we conclude that you probably would end up repeating that behaviour with our clients too. We hire people who care about doing things right, and take the time and effort to consistently deliver high quality. Your resume should reflect your commitment to those high standards.
