I agree with Sun Shine Girl about the attitude as an employee toward your boss. The boss is always right. As an employee, you should always put company first and work first. My tip to deal with the situation:

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛You are tired after working whole day. And the boss wouldn't let you go. Be honest to your boss and make an arrangement. For example, you can say something like these: "I am tired. I need something to eat. My eyes are sour, I need a nap. But I will be back in a hour or so." You will come back to get the job done no matter how late. You can take the next day off instead.

You need a strategy in dealing with the conflict. The company has work need to be done before deadline. On the other hand, you have the right to refuse to work overtime. Try to negotiate, be willing to compromise, and seeking alternative solutions. Do not just simply say NO. Even you really have to go, try to explain to your boss: "I am really tired. Even I stay here tonight, it wouldn't be very productive."

My last tip, but not less important tip, is to socialize with the people you work with, including your boss. Have a sense of humour. Say hi/good night to everyone you meet when you come and leave. Have a chat with the secretary in your break time. Go for a coffee, a puff, a lunch with your colleagues. If you are aware that someone is busy running into a deadline, come forward and offer your help. These are subtle things that have nothing to do with your professional qualification. But they reveal what kind of person you are. An excellent employee is the one who possesses both qualified professional skills and good personality, who cares about the company, the job, and the people around.

I declear that I condemn some Chinese, Indian, and other bad bosses who treat our new Chinese immigrants unfairly and unequally. These are some bad apples. But no matter whom you encounter, you should always stay a positive attitude.

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛1. Landed in July last year, two months later, knew about NOW programe which can gave professional new immigrants "canadian experience", so excited, called for more information, was told that I had to provide LINC assessment document to prove my English lever is above 6, hesitate but decided finally to obey this regulation(wait another two months to get LINC assessment result), then , returned to register meanwhile saw
other persons register this programe directly without LINC document.
Asked these persons curiously, was told that called the receptionist as many times as possible and probably you would get a chance when the staff was in a good mood, that's it!
The first canadian experience i got: if someone tells you there is a regulation here, don't trust him/her at all, persistent in breaking it, you will get what you want finally.

2)Another three months later, I got the interview to attend the NOW program, talked with interviewer very well, she said" you have good english and wonderful skills, we won't miss you in Canada, you can get
results after a couple of days." so,called after two days to follow up the status, knew although i was selected, i have to wait another four months
to take part in because too many people there, was angry but try my best to understand this matter, waited another four months honestly, attended the class in June, there was a lady to introduce her experience, said she landed in Toronto in March this year, registered without LINC assessment and attended the NOW program in May because there was a space at that time. I was stuned, there is a space for persons who registered later, there is no space for persons who have been waiting for several months?what's wrong with me?

Experience: Honest means nothing here but losing something. No fighting, No right!

3)Fortunately,I got volunteer placement after class, during interview, the
boss(chinese young guy) told me there are 5 employees in his company, one of them is a senior QA, excited again, because do want to
learn something from a experienced one. began my work from July,2nd, after two days, found nobody except the boss, asked him where the senior QA is? took another young guy for me, asked this guy to know that he was a part-time programmer here, confused but still continued to report bugs every day, after one module test(found almost 30
bugs one week), boss gave me oral promise that he can give me a contract job after this month, excited the third time. After two days, one night,he said my bug report was bad, at that time, it was over 9:00 pm, i was tired and i had to go home because this is the maintain phase, there is no deadline of this project, he preferred me to stay there untill midnight to help him to fix the bugs, i promised him to rewrite this tomorrow, i couldn't realize this would be the reason for him to stop my work. Tomorrow, my co-op teacher called me , said the boss called him to stop the work placement because my english is too bad, i wrote weird words which he couldn't understand. i asked the boss to tell me the truth instead of an excuse because i don't think my english is so bad, he answered" i am the boss, i have right to select the person i want to stay with", i said nothing but leaving. Before this, someone told me that you should try your best to let everybody love you during the co-op period, so, even if there is no chance, they would creat a chance for you, i laughed at this view, dreamed to get job by my abilities, what can i get? nothing! how stupid I am!

The third tip: open your eyes and use your brain during the interview and first day when you got there, don't go to a small company(less than 10 persons ) unless you have no choice

The fourth one: For a male, it is enough to be neither arrogant nor groveling, but for a female, it's not enough, pls, keep smiling, no matter how serious the circumstance is,please, show your soft skills First, work
ability? it is just for reference. trust me!

    • Great! Good luck~~~!
    • Sign... Sign again! My LD had the similar experience as you. Struggle to the last minute, you will not be unlucky always.
    • Quote: "canadian experience i got: if someone tells you there is a regulation here, don't trust him/her at all, persistent in breaking it, you will get what you want finally."
      1) "canadian experience i got: if someone tells you there is a regulation here, don't trust him/her at all, persistent in breaking it, you will get what you want finally."

      2) "Experience: Honest means nothing here but losing something.",

3)"don't go to a small company(less than 10 persons ) unless you have no choice"
      • agree.
比如, no need to do sth.
该为, there is no need to do sth.
    • three months later, called manager, said I want the shit(sheet0, said go to the toilet, ...., 看上去象ITALIAN的话...
    • 9:00pm is not too later. if i were you, i would stay till midnight. people ask you to help because you have value. but you disappointed him.
              • hahaha....
    • Some co-op jobs just like a piece of shit packed in a beautiful box with a 'HOPE' mark.
but you need time to check it out. after u know it is just a shit ,even it is a canadian shit with a 'hope' mark, but not different with other shits you ever seen in china. Anyway, don't speak out. they will laugh at u and make you confused. Maybe you will doubt your ability of identifing a shit.

    • Sounds terrible, hope you will get the luck soon after so much pain...
        1) NOW PROGRAM (FOR BEAR?FOX!)
        TEL: 416-393-0350
ADDRESS: 777 BLOOR WEST, (CHRISTIE SUBWAY)
        PROCEDURE: LINC 6->

        • Thanks a lot.
          • more informaion of NOW program , just individuals opinion (excuse me because i can't input chinese right now)
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Let me answer your questions about NOW program one by one
            1) I attended NOW program in June.

            2) There are 22 persons in my class, 10 of them are IT persons.
After class, 8 IT persons found the volunteer placement.

            3) So far, I haven’t got any good news from them that they are probably to be hired, but maybe it will take longer time to know the final results.

            4) To be honest, I don’t think there is a difference between NOW program and other workshops, but the only thing I am really interested in is that they provide volunteer placement after class, this is unique.

            5) I heard that there is a co-op program in Mississauga, it is said they have better results than NOW program, but the duration of volunteer placement is 3 months instead of 1 month, I am scared of this, for IT people (especially for programmer or test engineer), 3 months volunteer means you can almost finish a project for free, just want to get a reference letter? I can’t believe this. Besides, I am tired of this competition (For example, if you can do this 10 bucks/hour, so I can do this 8 dollars/hour), I don’t think it’s fair, that’s why I quit from this competition.

If you would like to know some more information, Contact me freely.
your interest will be appreciated.
            • Keep on trying
Take care of yourself. Everything will be OK. Trust yourself and find your own way.
Opportunities are everywhere, not just in IT
              • Thanks! you too, have a nice weekend.
            • hi, i am interested in your topics. How can i contact you directly? my telephone is 416-462-1524. thanks a million.

Oh, God,God. Me see no good, they see good. This is good or bad? me say, you say, they say and all say. please say.
    • I can't agree more.
I had worked 4 days for a small company two weeks ago, the boss promised me he would negotiate salary with me after first 2-weeks no salary trail. In the first week,I tried my best to help him get the job done.I think I can finish the project within two weeks. but I quickly found that he was taking advantage of me,so I decided to ask him for finishing the trail and giving me job offer. the reply was " wait". at the first weekend, he asked me overtime on Saturday, I refused. So when we discussd company document issues,he found an excuse and told me " you don't need to come again". I asked for 4 days allowance of ttc and lunch,he agreed. but I haven't got anything until now.
        • Yeah, how did you know that? anyway, take care of yourself
      • To jz74(开心树叶): 同是天涯沦落人, give us a lesson: watch out some small compnaies!
Jew
        • Coop is hard to do by yourself. you have to attend some job search program with coop. There's lots of them in GTA. Like Job star, NOW, yorkdale. I went derffrin-peel coop centre @ missauga.
      • He's a smart guy and know how to "use" me 100%, anyway, I am not idiot. I know how to "use" him and this opportunity to find me another job.
