Suggestion: Write more in English and less in Chinese

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I am very happy to see that more and more friends are contributing to our forum. However, one thing has been a puzzle to me. Since most of visitors at this site are existing or would-be Canadian permanent residents, why don't we discuss IT-related issues using English? I do believe we need to use our mother tongue if we want to discuss Chinese literature such as the Dream of Red Mansion (The Story of a Stone).

I understand that many friends in Canada are experiencing great pressure. To be or not to be, it is a question. It is no use to complain about Canada's system. Since we have chosen to live in Canada, we must be down-to-earth. One of commanding tasks is to learn English. If one is not self-motivated in this matter, he/she will be severely confined in the Chinese communities. However, we cannot always elude some issues that needs your English proficiency. I can enumerate a bunch of cases in which you need to use English:

1) If you are a programmer, you may need do a presentation or attend a conference call

2) If you are going to buy a car, you need to bargain with dealers.

3) If you are going to fix your car, you need to understand a lot of terms related to a car, such as idle, thermostat, front wheel bearings, muffler, dash lights, suspension, hood, .... just name a few.

4) If you are going to see a doctor, you need be able to describe your symptoms .

5) If you wish to plan for your retirement, you need to know a lot of financial jargons.

6) If your kids are going to school, you need to review a lot of papers they bring home on Friday.

One can add more to this list.

Maybe I am carrying coal to New Castle. If one or two friends follow my suggestion, I think I have not wasted my time in writing this note.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

    • I agree. BTW: I am a telecommunication person. Who can talk with me?
    • I totally agree with you. But last time, after I wrote some essaies in English, I disappointedly found that only a few people read it. So I gave up this effort.
      • Why do you think so? I read them, just I said nothing.
      • Dear Beer Fan, I am disappointed, too.
Beer Fan, I find that some of my best postings are neglected, but some of my trivial postings are followed by a lot of people.
        • Please don’t be disappointed
I appreciate your English articles very much. The reason that I don’t follow is just because I can’t correctly express my thoughts in English, but I got some from your posts and I think many people got some too. Thanks, hope to read your more articles.
        • Don't be disappointed, please. I think most people enjoy your articles and learn a lot from you. We just seldom talk for various reasons.
    • That is true. Enjoy reading your articles and please go on.
    • yes, why not, let's begin then.
    • envy!
    • Never saw a Chinese write English like you.Hats off!
    • Jabber, I am so glad to see your post again, thank you for your kindness to remind us. I totally agree with you!
      • I would rather write in English, but nobody responded to my post in English. Then I learned how to type in Chinese and posted the same question, I got more answers than I needed (thanks to those who responded) ...
Now if I feel I want to say more than two sentences I type a Chnese title and use English as thecontent. Otherwise I type Chinese in the subject field.
I agree with you everyone of us needs to practivce writing in English more, but I have also found joy in writing Chinese, even during the very slow type process. Because my Pinying spelling is very poor now (used to be good), I
have to try several times just to get a character I want, and I see other characters used to be so familiar, but now I almost forget.

I would say, use whatever language you feel comfortable, but keep in mind the English writing is one of many skills you need to survive in the north america.
        • You are a good exemplar to us.
