walkie-talkie is one kind of two-way radio, the low-tier one, it's designed for consumer market. like camping, hiking, etc. China has not open the frequency for consumer two-way radio, so

you cannot find such product in stores. All two-way radios used in China must be approved by frequency regulation department.

here in north america, there is a frequency band specially allocated for this market. so you can buy a pair of walkie-talkie in the super store and use it right away.

some difference between walkie-talkie and professional two-way radio:
1. most walkie-talkie are conventional ones. that means, they work like radios, but a half-duplex radio. On the other hand, more and more professional two-way radio use trunking technology.
2. the spec for walkie-talkie is loose. while professional two-way radio should meet military spec.
3. the shape of walkie-talkie is cute, since it is for consumer. while professional two-way radios are heavy and square most of the time.
4. walkie-talkie usually only support a limited set of features and they are cheap.
blah blah... and a lot others....

          • ^_^ yes, I used to develop firmware for two-way radios of Motorola. It's very interesting.

            thanks
            • check your mail.
            • Walkie-talkie is not worth to invest on. what you looking for is called FRS radio. They have longer range than wlkie-talkie(2miles)
You should be able to use FRS radios in China now since Motorola are already selling their products in China. Of course, here the price of the same product would be cheaper than it in China. Plus you have more variety to choose from. The best price you can get from the web is about $20 US per radio, and you need two in order to communicate. I bought two as a gift for my relative in China.
              • you can use FRS radios in China? Hmm, that's a good news.
        • It's called FRS radio in the market. And Motorola already got into the Chinese market. Their FRS radio and its frequency have already been permitted by the Chinese government.
    • 饭店、K厅里的领班门早就用上了。就是walky-talky嘛。
      • yes, they are. One model is GP68. You can find them in the Sichuan restaraunt in front of BJ motorola building. But anyway, it's not the same as what is sold here. Using GP68 needs frequency approval.
