I’m surprised that you haven’t taken any legal action to recover the loss of your son’s laptop. You can file a claim at a Small Claims Court against that student’s parents. As parents, they are vicariously liable for their child’s action. I assume that student is still young and under his parents’ care.

Question: Where do you live? Because different provinces have different rules on small claims court procedures. If you live in BC, check http://www.provincialcourt.bc.ca/aboutthecourt/smallclaimsmatters/index.html
If you live in ON, check http://www.attorneygeneral.jus.gov.on.ca/english/courts/scc/b4aClaim.asp

Don’t wait any longer! The longer you wait, the harder to get witnesses. In fact, you don’t need a lawyer to represent you. Good luck!
