Have been thinking about taking a long time (a couple of months) off to explore South America.

Tried twice, but didn't get approval for excused leave of absence (the company will keep the job for me), since travel is not considered as a valid excuse. You could first find out your company's policy to see if there are some you can take advantage of. Some companies may have more open policies. Good luck on that one.

As to where to find the information, I used to visit Lonely Planet discussion forum and the information is very helpful.

It's not an easy decision to quit job and spend half year on the road, although I have met a lot of people doing this. Consider your financial situation and examine your true passion to do this

                Want to do it before I lose all my passion. Just felt I'm so programmed to do everything and it didn't feel good. Need to work out some details, it might be nice to chat with somebody who's done that already. I'm gathering all the information for now, and will excercise in preparation.
