1.Job Description

Do you know your Java from your Java Script? Your Perl from your HTML? It抯 more likely that you know your English from your French, right? Well, Java and Perl are languages too, only it抯 computers that speak them. People who know these languages are often Web developers. They play an important role in making Web sites.

There are several stages in Web development. When clients contact a Web firm to design and develop a site, they sit down with higher-level project managers to discuss their needs. One of these project managers (who possess the combined skills of Web developers and designers) comes up with a plan and explains it in its simplest form. It is either accepted or rejected by the company.

If it抯 accepted, each person in the Web firm performs his or her own role. Whereas designers are more concerned with the look of a site, the developers essentially assemble it. Using these computer languages (numbers and formulas), they take information we would understand, and 揷ode?it. This means your computer will know that, when you click on a link, it is supposed to bring up another page, or other words.

Because Web developers often freelance, they have to take over the role of project manager from the outset. They are part-technical expert and part-salesperson. They are quite frequently their own designers as well.

As Web development matures, however, the tasks involved with the job are becoming more specialized. Not only are developers concentrating strictly on developing. They are focussing increasingly on one form of computer language, becoming experts in the language of their choice. This will allow for more skilled use of the developer抯 tools. Like a team of translators, it抯 better to have seven people who are each an expert in one language than to have seven people who speak seven different languages moderately well.

2.Working Conditions

Web developers spend most of their time in front of a computer screen coding information and links for Web pages and sites.

They may suffer back, neck, wrist or eye strain from spending long hours sitting at a desk. Taking frequent breaks and using ergonomically designed seats and keyboards can help prevent injuries.

Because most Web developers work on a freelance basis, they usually set their own hours. This often means long workdays, as projects must be finished on deadlines.

3.Earnings

Web developers usually work on a freelance contract basis. They work for any company that needs a Web site, from a veterinary practice to a large bank to a huge search engine.

Incomes for Web developers vary dramatically depending on whether they work freelance or full-time, the size of the projects they work on and, for freelancers, the amount of work they can secure. Beginning Web developers can earn from around $20,000 to $65,000 a year. Incomes for those with experience range from $35,000 to $80,000 a year. Developers who become project managers or directors of departments can earn anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 a year.

4.Education

Education & Training

As Web development is a fairly new area, there are no strict entry requirements. Practically anyone with a computer and some knowledge of programming languages can develop Web sites. However, those with formal training are often preferred by employers.

Concentrate on math and computers in high school. Then consider post-secondary courses in computer science. Above all, you must be up to date with the latest Web technologies and applications. This is a rapidly changing field.

Other Suggested Qualifications

You should have good math and accounting skills, particularly if you plan to work on a freelance basis. You should also have a solid interest in Web development and new technologies.

Read as many computer magazines as you can, and surf the many Web sites devoted to development. One of the best ways to learn is to design Web sites for yourself and friends.

      • ofcz yes!
